Conn’s Lindsey earns Div. III All-America honors in 100, 200

Geneva, Ohio — Connecticut College junior Malissa Lindsey earned All-America honors in two events, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the women's 100-meter dash final, during the NCAA Division III track and field championships on Saturday.

Lindsey finished the 100 in 11.60 seconds and placed fifth in the 200 in 23.89 seconds, both personal bests. She won both events earlier this month at the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship meet.

Lindsey was joined on the podium in the 100 by Coast Guard Academy's Michelle Kwafo, who placed fifth in a school record 11.81 to earn All-America honors for the first time in her career.

Kwafo also qualified for the nationals in the 100 hurdles, but didn't qualify for Saturday's final.

Conn College had a second All-American in junior Jeffrey Love, who placed eighth in the 10,000 in 30:37.78. Love came into the event seeded 20th.

College softball

• Fitch High School graduate Cassie Woods broke Eastern Connecticut State University's single-season hits record as the Warriors stayed alive in the NCAA Division III World Series with an 8-1 win over Millikin (Ill.) in an elimination game in Salem, Va. The Warriors (44-6), who lost their opening game in the double-elimination tournament to Trine, 4-2 in eight innings, were scheduled to play another elimination game Saturday night against Berry (Ga).

Woods broke the record held by another Fitch great (and Woods' former coach) Arielle Cooper when she singled in the third inning. It was her 72nd hit of the season and she added her 73rd when she singled during a five-run seventh that broke the game open.

Montville's Alexis Michon pitched allowed just one run and three hits over six solid innings to improve to 24-1 for the Warriors and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly during ECSU's big seventh inning.

College baseball

• Top-seeded UConn advanced to the Big East tournament championship round with a 7-1 victory over No. 2 seed Creighton at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. The Huskies (4513) will play the winner of Saturday night's elimination game between Creighton and No. 3 Xavier in today's title round at noon. A second game, if necessary, would follow at 4 p.m.

Pat Gallagher pitched seven innings to earn the win, allowing just one run on three hits with strikeouts, while Korey Morton snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run homer in the third. Morton added a solo shot in the fifth, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. The Huskies will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Division I tournament by winning tournament.

H.S. girls' lacrosse

• No. 16 Wheeler/Grasso Tech, making its first state tournament appearance since 2008, lost to No. 17 East Catholic 20-9 in the Class S qualifying round. Sophia Gouveia scored five goals for the Lions, who finish 5-6, while Katelyn Melinosky added three goals and Grace Cassata scored once.

H.S. boys' lacrosse

• Nolan Brown scored in overtime to lead No. 15 NFA to a 14-13 win over No. 18 Hall in the Class L qualifying round on Friday. The Wildcats (107) play at No. 2 Staples in the first round on Wednesday. Logan Jenkins had five goals and an assist, Quinn Perkins scored three goals, Brown had three goals and an assist, Sam Sweeney made 18 saves, Anthony Ballestrini had two goals and three assists and Conor Gaughan had a goal and an assist for NFA.

• Ethan Mahoney scored four goals and had an assist as No. 15 Stonington beat No. 18 Norwich Tech/Windham Tech 17-4 in the Class qualifying round on Friday. The Bears (11-8) play at No. 2 Ellington in the first round on Wednesday. Cam Elenteny had three goals and three assists, Tyler Simao had three goals and an assist, Will Banfield made seven saves, and Nate Mahoney, Cooper Light and Patrick McGugan had two goals each.
