— Mathieu “Matty”

Stonington P. Wicker, 45, of Pawcatuck, died Thursday, May 26, 2022, at his home surrounded by all the people who loved and cared deeply for him after a long battle against a chronic respiratory disease. Mathieu was born Sept. 15, 1976, in Bordeaux, France, to his loving parents Pierre A. Wicker and Maryse Dhers Wicker, who survive him.

Mathieu moved to the USA, with his family first temporarily in 1979, and then permanently in 1984. He first immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, before living in Massachusetts, and finally calling Mystic and Pawcatuck home.

Despite facing challenges in social skills and verbal communication from being a person with autism, his wonderful personality and dry sense of humor always shone through. He showed the world that people with intellectual disabilities are affectionate, loving, funny and wonderful human beings who smile, laugh, love and cry like all of us. He loved music with a good beat, delicious food thanks to his French heritage, with a penchant for chocolate and sweets. Mathieu had a grin that could charm anyone into doing exactly what he wanted, a fact that he took advantage of often.

Besides his loving parents he is also survived by his devoted sister, Julie Wicker. He will be greatly missed by his family, his Journey Found staff and friends and all the many people whose lives he touched over the years.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mathieu’s memory to Journey Found, 60 Hilliard St., Manchester, CT 06042 or at journeyfound.org/
