Clippers win ECML opener
Groton — Shawn Nadeau led the Clippers to an 8-3 win over the Padres as the Eastern Connecticut Major League opened its 29th season on Sunday.
Nadeau struck out 12 in five innings for the win and was 2-for-2 with a grand slam. Mike Evans had two hits for the Clippers. Ken Olszewski singled and doubled and Rich Cruz had a three-run single for the Padres.
College baseball
• Matt Donlan's three-run home run in the seventh inning, one of four UConn blasts, broke the game open and the Huskies defeated No. 15 overall seed Maryland 10-5 Saturday night in the winners' bracket of the College Park Regional. The Huskies' power, which included Zach Bushling's tworun shot in a four-run eighth.
UConn (48-13) took a quick lead when David Smith and Erik Stock led off the bottom of the first with backto-back home runs. Maryland (46-13) tied it at 2 on Kevin Keister's home run in the third and an RBI single from Ian Petrutz in the fifth. Smith drew a leadoff walk in the Huskies' half of the fifth, Stock followed with a fielder's choice and after Casey Dana singled, Stock scored the go-ahead run on a ground out by Ben Huber.
Pat Gallagher (10-3) went seven innings, allowing seven hits and two runs for UConn. Stock scored four runs and Bryan Padilla had three hits.
• Eastern Connecticut State beat LaGrange College 4-3 in a game that ended Sunday morning in the NCAA Division III tournament at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Warriors (46-3) have won 20 straight games and play LaGrange again on Monday at 2:15 p.m. The game was scheduled for Sunday night but postponed by rain. Former Killingly standout Brian Albee pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
