George Ambulos Sr.

— George Pericles East Lyme Ambulos Sr., 96, beloved, husband, father, grandfathe­r and great-grandfathe­r, passed away June 20, 2022. He was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Manchester, son of the late Pericles George Ambulos and Victoria Nicholas Tsivgianis (Stevens) Ambulos from Lesvos, Greece.

George attended Manchester High School, and like so many others of his generation, he left high school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 6, 1943, and trained to become a certified landing craft coxswain, diesel mechanic and gunner, achieving the rank of MoMM2/c. He was assigned to the USS Haskell (APA 117), the lead ship of her class of attack transport ships. His ship participat­ed in numerous offensive campaigns in the Philippine­s Theatre, including the amphibious Invasion of Okinawa during April 1 through 6, 1945. George was awarded numerous medals, including one Bronze Star, for his service. He was honorably discharged May 6, 1946, shortly before the decommissi­oning of the USS Haskell. He returned to Manchester, where he completed his GED and enrolled at the University of Connecticu­t, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in business administra­tion and graduated in June of 1951.

He married the love of his life, Marjory (Hazard) Ambulos on Sept. 27, 1952, and they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversar­y this past September. George worked at the Perry’s Restaurant (Lyme Tavern), a family business, and worked at Pfizer. George was employed by the State of Connecticu­t, where he served as a jobs counselor for 32 years, retiring in 1988. George loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved boating, fishing, crabbing, camping, woodworkin­g, gardening, singing and playing the mandolin and banjo at parties. George loved working in the yard. He enjoyed going to the beach and loved spending time in Jamestown, R.I. He was an avid UConn basketball fan. He was a parishione­r of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Mason’s, American Legion and on the Connecticu­t committee for people with disabiliti­es.

George was predecease­d by his sisters, Bessie Ambulos and Mary Kleczkowsk­i of Niantic. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjory Ambulos; his brothers, Nicholas and Merlene Ambulos of Maine, and Charles Ambulos of Niantic; his children, Cynthia and Nickolas Kortesis of Poughkeeps­ie, N.Y., George and Beverly Ambulos of South Windsor, and Gregory Ambulos of Jamestown, R.I.; grandchild­ren: Nickolas, Stephanie, Alyssa, Kyle, Krista, Gregory, Mitchell and Samantha; great-grandchild­ren, Douglas, Evy, Aaron and Jayce; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him and loved him, and will be forever in our hearts.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, June 24, at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead Street, New London, for all family and friends. Interment with military honors will follow at Union Cemetery in Niantic. The family wishes that any donations be made to the Veterans Administra­tion of Connecticu­t.
