Pawcatuck — John A. Carey, 84, of Pawcatuck, passed away peacefully at Westerly Hospital surrounded by his family Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023. He was born in New Haven to the late Conrad and Shirley (Stiles) Carey. He attended local schools in Meriden and was a graduate of Meriden High School.

Following his high school education, John attended UConn earning his bachelor’s degree in business management. He was employed in various management positions at Electric Boat in Groton, AVCO-Lycoming Division in Stratford, UNC Aerospace Division, Norwich, and UNC Naval Products in Uncasville. His 19 years with UNC was the most rewarding work experience throughout his long career.

John is survived by his two daughters, Anna Carey of New London, and Amy Arruda and her husband, Raymond, of Pawcatuck; his granddaugh­ters, Kalie, Brooke and Miranda Arruda; and a great-granddaugh­ter. He is also survived by his two sisters, Pamela Carey of Holderness, N.H., and Lynn Gilderslee­ve of Westbrook. He was predecease­d by his brother Walter Carey.

John also leaves nephews, a niece, a great-nephew and great-niece.

John loved traveling, visiting 31 of the 50 states, plus many foreign destinatio­ns such as Canada, Bermuda, Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, France, Belgium, the Netherland­s, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Switzerlan­d, Luxembourg, Liechtenst­ein, Greece and Egypt.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 28, with a time of sharing words of remembranc­e beginning 11:15 a.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. John’s burial will be held privately in Westbrook later.
