Oprah, Kerry Washington join Tyler Perry’s historical drama
Kerry Washington has been tapped to act in and produce Tyler Perry’s first historical drama “Six Triple Eight,” which begins production this month at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
And Perry’s friend Oprah Winfrey will take part in the film as well. This will be her first acting role in five years.
Dr. Dre sells assets
Dr. Dre is selling assets including his artist royalties from N.W.A. and for two solo albums, along with producing royalties and other entities, for more than $200 million, Variety reported.
The sales are being made to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group through a pair of deals for assets making around $10 million a year, according to Variety.
NAACP Image nominations
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King” lead the 54th NAACP Image Awards nominations, scoring 12 and nine nominations, respectively.
In television, ABC’s Philadelphia school-set comedy “Abbott Elementary” led the small-screen and streaming nominations with nine nods, including entertainer of the year recognition for star and creator Quinta Brunson.
“Wakanda Forever” and “The Woman King” are up against Netflix’s “A Jazzman’s Blues,” Apple’s Will Smith drama “Emancipation” and Universal’s Emmett Till biopic “Till.”
Winners will be announced at a Feb. 25 ceremony that will air live on BET.
Byrne’s musical on Broadway
David Byrne’s pop musical “Here Lies Love” will open July 20 at the Broadway Theatre on 53rd Street.
The disco-centric show — a collaboration between Byrne and fellow musician Fatboy Slim — focuses on Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, who was married to dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
