— Stonington William Brooks Ware, M.D., 74, of Stonington, died unexpected­ly, Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023.

Born in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Frank and Vieno (Koski) Ware and lived in Stonington for the past 32 years.

Bill grew up in Stow, Mass., where he attended local schools. Following high school, he enrolled at Colby College earning his A.B. degree. Bill continued his education receiving his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine Class of 1974.

Bill’s private surgical practice spanned over 30 years beginning at the Aliquippa Hospital in Aliquippa, Pa., in general and vascular surgery and more recently with the Westerly Hospital for general surgery. He recently retired in 2022.

He was a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, honorably discharged in 1993.

Bill was a member of several organizati­ons during his profession­al career, including, the American Board of Surgery, University of Vermont College of Medicine Century Club, and the Knights of Kaleva. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, enjoyed birdwatchi­ng, and was an avid outdoorsma­n.

He will be remembered as a loving husband and is survived by his wife of 48 years, Vickie J. (Silvester) Ware; a gentle and supportive father to his four children, William D. Ware, Kay Frank, Daniel B. Ware and Jessica L. Ware. Bill is also survived by a brother, John Paul Ware.

A memorial service celebratin­g his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, at the Mystic Congregati­onal Church, 43 E. Main St., in Mystic.
