Eastman-Grossel is 13th in Jr. Olympic heptathlon

Zoe Eastman-Grossel, a junior to be at Lyme-Old Lyme High School, finished 13th in the heptathlon in her age group (15-16) at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championsh­ips on July 24-25 at Eugene, Oregon.

She scored 3,669 points in the seven events, over 200 points better than her previous best of 3,475. She had personal bests in the javelin at 75-feet, 10.75-inches, and 200 meters at 26.66. She finished eighth in the 200 and 100 hurdles (15.81).

Mitchell hires Hoch

• Tim Hoch has been hired as head coach of the Mitchell College men's and women's cross country programs. The Fishers Island native will be making his collegiate coaching debut. He was as runner in high school and college, including a season at Mitchell (2013).

"I'm hoping to bring a positive and supportive approach, implement individual­ized training plans, team building activities, and a strong emphasis on goal setting and boosting the cross country program for years to come," Hoch said in a release.

At Mitchell, Hoch finished 13th at the Wesleyan Invitation­al and led the team at the Elms Invitation­al where he placed 58th overall. He was also a member of the men's basketball program for one year.

"I'm thrilled that Tim Hoch has agreed to be our new men's and women's cross country coach and confident that he will bring the same passion and work ethic directing this program as he did when he was a student athlete," said Mitchell Associate Athletic Director Todd Peretz in a release.

Hoch was a three year letterwinn­er on the men's basketball team at SUNY Maritime College after leaving

Mitchell. He also was the head coach of the boys' basketball team at Fishers Island School.

• Christian Scanlon hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New Britain Bees rallied for a 6-5 win over the Norwich Sea Unicorns in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game.

Dean Ferrara (Fairfield) drove in three runs and Zach Donahue (ECSU) had two hits and scored twice for Norwich (31-20).

• The Mystic Schooners beat the Ocean State Waves 6-3 in a rain-shortened game on Thursday night in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The game ended after seven innings.

The Schooners (26-16) scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Drew Kron (UConn) doubled home a run and Matthew Brinker (Northeaste­rn) followed with a two-run double. Danny Melnick (Rutgers) was 2-for-4 with a double.

ECML playoffs

• The Eastern Connecticu­t Major League playoffs begin Monday, July

31. All games will be played on Roger Bidwell Field at Washington Park in Groton. Regular-season champions the Padres are the No. 1 seed, the DBI Rats are No. 2, the Sonics are No. 3 and the DBI Cats are seeded fourth.

The Padres and Cats will play in one best-of-three semifinal series and the Sonics and Rats will play in the other.

The winners will meet in the bestof-three ECML World Series beginning on Monday, Aug. 7. All playoff games begin at 6:30 p.m.
