GERMÁN’S TUMULTUOUS YANKEES CAREER LIKELY OVER FOLLOWING ROSTER MOVES; CORDERO ALSO ON WAIVERS

-

New York — Domingo Germán’s roller coaster ride of a year took another loop on Thursday, as the Yankees placed the pitcher and five others on outright waivers, the Daily News confirmed.

Pitchers Matt Bowman, Jimmy Cordero and Ryan Weber and outfielders Franchy Cordero and Billy McKinney joined Germán on waivers.

All of those players are arbitration-eligible. Other teams can claim them; such moves would be announced on Monday. If they go unclaimed, the Yankees can outright them to the minor leagues. However, the players can elect free agency at that point.

Germán, who had another year of team control, is the most talented of the bunch, but also the most embattled. The 31-yearold’s 2023 season ended in August with him voluntarily entering inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse following a drunken clubhouse incident, as detailed by the Wall Street Journal’s Lindsey Adler. He was also suspended earlier in the season for using sticky stuff.

In between those incidents, Germán threw the fourth perfect game in Yankees history.

Following the clubhouse incident, Germán landed on the restricted list for the second time in his career. The righty was put on administrative leave in September 2019 for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy, and he ultimately served an 81-game suspension. Germán had been drinking prior to that incident as well.

Earlier this week, Germán posted a picture of himself at a bar on his Instagram story. While no drink appeared directly in front of him in the photo, some within the Yankees front office didn’t appreciate the optics, according to a source.
