‘DRUNK VULTURES’ BECOME SUBJECT OF COLBERT MONOLOGUE

Last week, a pair of Connecticut vultures were deemed “too drunk to fly” after being taken in by an avian rehabilitation clinic in Killingworth. Co-founder and avian rehabilitator Christine Cummings, who runs A Place Called Hope, wrote in a Facebook post that the birds were given liquids and time to rest followed by “a BIG breakfast the next day” before they were released back into the wild.

Cummings believed that the vultures ingested some food that was fermented in a dumpster, which resulted in their intoxication.

The news, which made national headlines, traveled around the media circuit and finally onto the desk of the host of the eponymous “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”

Colbert opened the monologue of his Thursday night show by talking about former President Donald Trump and President Joe

Biden before discussing the Connecticut birds.

“Here’s something I rarely say. There’s interesting news from Connecticut,” Colbert said before diving into the topic.

From pulling up a graphic of a vulture hailing a “UBird” to mimicking a drunken driving incident with the vultures (“Alright touch your beak with your wings. Great, now recite the alphabet backwards...OK, you’re drunk”), Colbert made a bevy of jokes over the incident.

Colbert ended the segment on the vultures by singing a rendition of the traditional sea shanty “Drunken Sailor,” but instead reimagining the lyrics to, “What do you do with a drunken vulture?”

According to Cummings’ post, the vultures immediately returned to their colony upon their release.
