philadelph­ia» A hitchhikin­g robot that captured the hearts of fans worldwide met its demise in the U.S.

The Canadian researcher­s who created hitchBOT as a social experiment say someone in Philadelph­ia damaged the robot beyond repair on Saturday, ending its brief American tour.

The robot was trying to travel cross-country after successful­ly hitchhikin­g across Canada last year and parts of Europe.

It set out from Marblehead, Mass., two weeks ago in July with the goal of reaching San Francisco.

The creators were sent an image of the vandalized robot but cannot track its location because the battery is dead.

Dominique Rondeau, now 18, was accused of throwing an icy snowball that shattered a school police car windshield in December 2013. He denied it.

Unable to come up with $2,000 bond, he spent weeks in juvenile detention until his bond was reduced.

A judge dismissed the case after officers looked at a video in court and couldn’t identify Rondeau as the person who threw the snowball, the Detroit Free Press reported.

seneca, s.c.» A South Carolina police chief says he will not release the name of an officer who fatally shot a 19-year-old man in a Hardee’s parking lot, insisting the officer acted in self-defense.

While the attorney for the teen’s parents disputed the officer’s account, Seneca Chief John Covington reiterated Friday the department considers the officer a victim of attempted murder.

Zachary Hammond was shot twice about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday. According to a police report, he drove a 23-year-old woman to the parking lot after an undercover officer arranged to buy marijuana from her.
