Homeless appointee is missing

- By Karen Antonacci

longmont» The Longmont City Council appointed a homeless man to the city’s housing authority board, but city staff members haven’t heard from him since he submitted an application and don’t know how to reach him.

Josh Canvasser applied for appointment to the fivemember Longmont Housing Authority board earlier this year.

The housing authority aims to provide affordable housing to low-income residents of the city.

Canvasser included his contact information with his application, but Longmont City Clerk Valeria Skitt said staff members ran into problems locating the man for his interview.

It’s usual for applicants to complete the interview process for a board position, but Skitt said it’s not mandatory.

“He left a P.O. box, but that mail was returned to us,” Skitt said. “He had an email (address), but that came back to us as invalid. There was his cellphone number, but that was disconnected.

“If we can get a hold of him, he can tell us whether he can fulfill the duties of that board, but it’s really getting ahold of him that’s the problem,” Skitt said.

After checking with the city attorney’s office, Skitt said the council needs to take a formal vote to remove Canvasser from the board and advertise the position again. To remove someone from a board, the vote must pass with a twothirds majority.
