Bridge Foursome from Fort Collins places second in Chicago

- By Jared Johnson

Congratulations are in order for Gregory and Dawn Foltz, Gregory Herman and Burke Snowden, all of Fort Collins, runners-up in a national championship at the American Contract Bridge League’s Summer North American Bridge Championships in Chicago this month.

The Colorado foursome plus teammates Mark Robertson and Richard Jacobson, both of Phoenix, grabbed second place in this year’s multistage Flight B Grand National Teams, an impressive accomplishment.

Local tournaments: Because the drive from Denver to Grand Junction on Interstate-70 has to be one of the most scenic in the country, it’s an added attraction for players attending Grand Junction’s annual summer bridge tournament. Of course, they also want to win once they’re there. These players posted the top scores in upper-division events at competition this month:

Chuck and Pat Henke of Aurora were double winners, triumphing in the double-session Stratified Open Pairs as well as in the Stratified Swiss Teams with teammates Don and Anita Heitler of Englewood.

Jeannette Roberts of Delta and Michael Thorpe of Montrose won the first single-session Stratified Open Pairs with the second session going to Joseph and Barbara Gschwendtner of Castle Rock.

Appointments: Several Colorado players have been appointed to the American Contract Bridge League’s Good Will Committee in recognition of their service to the administrative side of bridge.

Recent Denver bridge unit board member Cal Newlin of Aurora was chairman for Denver’s regional tournaments for several years and will be co-chairing the novice-intermediate program at the upcoming national bridge tournament in Denver with his wife, Flo. The Newlins are among the top-ranked married bridge couples in Colorado.

Flo Newlin is one of Denver’s two representatives on the District 17 board of directors.

Shelbie Bastiaans of Parker is also a recent Denver bridge unit board member and still active in the novice-intermediate area. She was chairman two years for the fairly new Pro-Am game kicking off Denver’s annual regional bridge tournament in May and will be on the novice-intermediate committee for the upcoming national tournament.

Vicki Hamende of Fort Collins is the current president of the Northern Colorado bridge unit, active in organizing the sectional tournaments that take place twice a year in Loveland, as well as other unit activities.

AcrossColorado’s northern border, Rod Southworth of Cheyenne is also a new Good Will Committee member. Southworth sits on the district board and is the district’s Grand National Teams coordinator.

The tournament bridge world depends on many local volunteers to run tournaments and other events, and these players are to be commended for their time and effort behind the scenes.

New Player Plateaus: Congratulations to new Life Masters Bert Solomon of Edwards, Dorothy Hyden of Colorado Springs and Steve Lehman of Evergreen; also to new Gold Life Master (2,500 masterpoint level) Robert Harward of Colorado Springs; and new Silver Life Masters (1,000 masterpoints) Karen Kribs of Aspen, Elizabeth Varra of Windsor and Gregory Herman.

Bridge Lessons: The Denver House of Cards, 1800 W. Oxford Ave., has Beginning Bridge taught by Paul Ossip coming up beginning 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 for five weeks. This frequently offered class is for people looking to learn the game or perhaps wishing a refresher course before returning to the game.
