PUGH MAKES ROSTER FOR U. S. NATIONAL TEAM TRAINING CAMP

Mallory Pugh, the Mountain Vista/ Real Colorado standout and under- 20 U. S. women’s national team midfielder, is one of 26 players named by national team coach Jill Ellis to the first training camp roster of 2016 leading into the first soccer match.

Pugh, one of the youngest field players called into the full U. S. national team in the past 15 years, recently captained the U- 20s to a 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup berth and CONCACAF title at the qualifying tournament in Honduras. She will turn 18 in April. The UCLA pledge and reigning Gatorade Colorado and national girls soccer player of the year was also recently voted the 2015 U. S. soccer young female player of the year. The team will train for 17 days at the U. S. soccer national training center in Carson, Calif., then will play the Republic of Ireland on Jan. 23 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

UNC wins conference opener GREELEY » Jordan Wilson made 10of- 11 shots for a career- high 26 points and Northern Colorado opened Big Sky Conference play with a 96- 90 victory over Eastern Washington.

Wilson made all three of his 3- point attempts and handed out seven assists. He has reached double- digit scoring for the Bears ( 4- 9) in all 13 games this season.

• Ryan Arcidiacon­o hit seven 3pointers and scored 27 points as No. 16 Villanova showed it may again be the team to beat in the Big East, thumping No. 6 Xavier 95- 64.

Xavier freshman guard Edmond Sumner was “walking and talking” at a hospital after he was taken off the court on a stretcher following a hard fall during the game.

• Rodney Bullock scored a careerhigh 25 points, Kris Dunn came close to a triple- double and No. 12 Providence rallied to beat No. 9 Butler 81- 73 in the Big East opener for both teams.

Dunn had 20 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.

Gonzaga loses Karnowski SPOKANE, wash. » Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski will miss the rest of the season after undergoing back surgery.

Bulldogs coach Mark Few said Karnowski had surgery Thursday.

The 7- foot- 1 center has been out since Nov. 27 because of a bulging disc and missed six games. He averaged 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games.

Goff among NFL early entries BERKELEY, calif. » California quarterbac­k Jared Goff is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

His decision was not unexpected and came two days after he capped his stellar career by throwing six touchdown passes in a bowl victory over Air Force.

Another top quarterbac­k, Paxton Lynch of Memphis, said he also will bypass his senior season to begin his pro career.

Also, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said defensive end Joey Bosa and running back Ezekiel Elliott will join quarterbac­k Cardale Jones as Buckeyes who will leave early for the draft.

U. S. junior hockey tops Denmark HELSINKI » Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist to lead the United States to a 4- 1 victory over Denmark at the world junior hockey championsh­ip.

Matthews tied it at 1 in the first period, and Sonny Milano put the U. S. ahead in the second period. Matthews assisted on Colin White’s third- period goal, and Anders Bjork added a power- play goal.

“We had a slow start, but we came together in the middle of the game and capitalize­d on some chances,” said Matthews, expected to be the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft.

The Americans finished second in Group A at 3- 1- 0. They will face the Czech Republic in the quarterfin­als.
