WOMAN SENTENCED IN HATE ATTACK
A Denver judge on Monday sentenced a 21-year-old woman to two years of probation for a July attack on a lesbian couple that prosecutors say was a hate crime.
Jhane Toney was given a suspended 60-day jail term contingent upon her successful completion of probation, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the city’s district attorney’s office. Toney pleaded guilty in November to a bias-motivated crime that left a victim fearful and third-degree assault — both Class 1 misdemeanors.
Police don’t know if thefts are connected.
Two more smash-and-grab burglaries in Sheridan on Monday morning upped the total of similar crimes during the past week to at least 20 in three metro-area jurisdictions.
It is not clear whether the break-ins in Englewood, Denver and Sheridan are connected, police officials from the jurisdictions said.
In Sheridan, thieves broke into a Verizon Wireless shop where they stole display models, including an iPad, and took more than $100 from the cash register at Truck Logic, a truck accessory store, said Bruce Williamson, Sheridan police operations commander.
Pedestrian injured in light-rail accident. A pedestrian
was injured Monday afternoon in a lightrail accident in downtown Denver.
The serious injury accident happened at the 20th and Welton streets RTD light-rail stop, according to the Denver Police Department.
The male victim was on the platform when he apparently fell, police said, striking the light-rail train, which was moving. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Police ID driver suspected in fatal crash.
Denver police have identified the 55-year-old man they suspect of triggering a fourvehicle crash Sunday that left two people dead and others seriously injured.
Semere Dawit is suspected of vehicular homicide in the case. Police spokeswoman Christine Downs said he remained hospitalized Monday after being seriously injured in the wreck. The crash happened at 2:20 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South Colorado Boulevard at East Mexico Avenue.
Former council candidate accused of forging signatures. A former Denver
City Council candidate was accused Monday of attempting to make last year’s ballot by using forged petition signatures, including some who were dead and even some “Sesame Street” characters.
Corrie Houck, 44, faces felony counts in Denver County Court of attempting to influence a public servant and forgery plus misdemeanor counts of perjury. A warrant for her arrest was issued.
Houck didn’t make the May 5 ballot for the District 2 race because too few signatures were confirmed on her candidacy petitions.
