A 21- year- old Littleton man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole for a 2014 sword attack on a teenager in the woods just north of Breckenridge.

TyrusVanmatrewas convicted in September of several charges, including seconddegree attempted murder, first- degree kidnapping and first- degree assault.

Along with the life sentence, Vanmatre also was handed a penalty of 112 years in prison, prosecutors said.

“The citizens ofColorado are safer with Mr. Vanmatre in prison,” 5th Judicial DistrictAttorney Bruce Brown said in a statement. “He is a dangerous criminal who planned to kill a man he called a friend.”

Prosecutors say in June 2014 Vanmatre took his 18year- old victim, Jadon Jellis, into the woods near Sapphire Point on SwanMountain Road and struck him with a sword.

Althoughwounded, Jellis was able to fight back and escape. Jellis hid in the woods in the darkness, evading detection as Vanmatre searched for him.

In the predawn darkness after Vanmatre attacked him, Jellis, covered in blood with deep cuts on his face, was found stumbling on Swan Mountain Road by a passing deputy.

According toThe Summit Daily, Vanmatre’s attorney said the attack stemmed from “a bad acid trip” and was not planned in malice.
