English new D- coordinator on Bobo sta≠
fort collins » Colorado State’s new defensive coordinator needs no introduction, because linebackers coach Marty English has been elevated back into the DC role for the Rams, only without the “co-” before the title.
English will be entering his 30th season in coaching, his fifth with CSU. In his first three seasons with the Rams, he served as the linebackers coach and co- defensive coordinator with Al Simmons during Jim McElwain’s tenure.
Rams coach Mike Bobo retained English to coach linebackers. English replaces defensive coordinator Tyson Summers, as he did for the Arizona Bowl. Summers left the Rams to become the coach at Georgia Southern.
Bobo said this week that he was looking for a defensive coordinator whowould keep an aggressive style of play, and he didn’t have to travel far down the hallway to find him.
“We had lots of very qualified people interested in this job, butwe had a very qualified person on this staff who has been a coordinator in this league,” Bobo said in a news release, “and I want to reward people who have been loyal to me. Marty has done an outstanding job inmy time here, and takes great pride in being a Colorado State Ram.”
The role is not new to English. In addition to sharing the defensive coordinator title at CSU, he also has performed the task at Northern Colorado and Wyoming, totaling nine years. While Bobo did not say whether English would continue to coach the Rams’ linebackers, he has mentored linebackers for 26 seasons.
English’s promotion still leaves the Rams one coach short of a full staff.
