MORNING SKATE BEFORE GAME

- Terry Frei, The Denver Post

The Avalanche again conducted a full- morning skate Friday at the Pepsi Center in advance of the game against Nashville, taking another step away from coach Patrick Roy’s plan going into the season to go through that NHL tradition on game day only infrequently.

The experiment, if it can be called that, has evolved into sometimes having most players stay off the ice on individual days between games and do conditioning work then having the game- morning skate.

Roy noted that the Avalanche was coming off an 8 p.m. Wednesday game against St. Louis that went into overtime.

“It’s the schedule,” Roy said. “Especially after you play an 8 o’clock game, I feel the next day it’s better off if we rest than go on the ice. I asked our leaders what was their thinking about that, and they all seemed comfortable having either a gym or a day off between games and have a good morning skate and get our mind into the game.”

Roy added, “You have to adapt to different situations. I have to adapt also to the group and what they prefer.”

Captain’s view. Gabe Landeskog said of the evolving plan: “We’re fine with it. The way the schedule works, instead of practicing the day before, we work out the day before and stay off the ice, and we’ll skate in the morning the day of a game. We’re still fresh; we’re still feeling good. And since we don’t skate every single day between games, it’s nice to get a day in between games where you just go to the rink and work out and stay off the ice. ...

“We still get to go on the ice and get the feel of the puck on the day of the game.”

Gormley status. Although defenseman Brandon Gormley cleared waivers Friday, he officially remained on the Colorado roster, wasn’t sent down to San Antonio and was listed as a healthy scratch against the Predators.
