Osweiler in good shape even if he doesn’t play Will No. 17 return?

- Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds

What are your thoughts concerning the future of quarterback Brock Osweiler in Denver? Will his benching affect any efforts of the Broncos re-signing him? More important, do the Broncos have interest in investing a $12 million salary in Osweiler?

Lonnie, budgeting for 2016

Kiz: Nobody wants to be the backup, whether your role is NFL quarterback or a tree in the elementary-school play. We here at Kickin’ It Headquarters, however, do not weep for Osweiler for two reasons: 1) By coming off the bench when the Broncos needed him during the regular season, he made a ton of money on his next contract, whether he plays in Colorado or elsewhere; and 2) Here’s betting if there are three playoff games remaining for Denver, you will see Osweiler come off the bench and play again this season.

Critical treatment. I have no idea why I have taken the critical treatment of quarterback Peyton Manning so personally. Maybe it’s because I am old. I can’t imagine what he is going through, but it breaks my heart.

Marcia, aging like fine wine

Kiz: Know what might be worse than being stuck with a body that doesn’t work as well as it once did? Learning to accept it. Manning has not consistently been able to throw a deep pass to the sideline for more than a year. But accepting his diminished role as a game manager might have been even tougher for a five-time MVP. My guess is the six weeks lost to a foot injury caused Manning to wonder if he had taken his last meaningful snap. Now that Gary Kubiak has given the 39-yearold quarterback one more chance to start, Manning will be more likely to act his age and play in the conservative fashion his coach demands.

A regular Red Skelton. Kiz, along with reasoned prose, your writing frequently includes a “barb” that pricks the skin of opinionated readers. You create dialogue, and that is good for the Broncos, The Denver Post and our world at large. Honest is honest, regardless of the diatribe from maniacal fans unwilling to look beyond their preconceived ideas. From my perspective, you are the Red Skelton of today’s sportswriters, offering subtle humor to ease — or roil — the angst of rabid fans, with humble insight into complex sports questions.

Mike, man of obvious good taste

Kiz: The check is in the mail.

Parting shot. And today’s parting shot is a slap at the Broncos, courtesy of a Patriots fan who sounds nervous about seeing Denver in the AFC championship game.

Manning will be there, win or lose, throwing his teammates under the bus, after they go one and done again in the playoffs.
