OVECHKIN JOINS 500-GOAL CLUB

-

washington» Alex Ovechkin scored the 500th and 501st goals of his career, becoming the 43rd NHL player to join the 500 club and helping the Capitals pound the Senators 7-1 on Sunday.

Ovechkin’s 500th goal came in vintage fashion, scoring from just beyond the left hash marks during a second-period power play to give the Caps a 5-1 lead.

Teammates mobbed Ovechkin, who received an extended standing ovation while skating around the rink, acknowledging the cheering crowd that included his parents. He later drew another roar while waving to fans from the Washington bench.

The Capitals have won 10 consecutive home games.

Justin Williams, T.J. Oshie, Zach Sill, Dmitry Orlov and Tom Wilson also scored for Washington. Jason Chimera and Nicklas Backstrom contributed three assists apiece, and Philipp Grubauer made 32 saves.

Mike Hoffman scored Ottawa’s goal, and Andrew Hammond stopped only 29-of-36 shots.
