Jan­uary 2007: A woman ac­cuses Coyne, then a Mesa County sher­iff’s deputy, of sex­u­ally as­sault­ing her dur­ing a night­time drug raid at her home. Coyne al­ready has ac­cepted a job with the Grand Junc­tion Po­lice Depart­ment. Mesa County au­thor­i­ties never in­form Grand Junc­tion of the al­le­ga­tion. Mesa County au­thor­i­ties do not in­ves­ti­gate the ac­cu­sa­tion.

De­cem­ber 2008: A woman al­leges Coyne sex­u­ally as­saulted her sev­eral days af­ter he trans­ported her to a men­tal health and detox­i­fi­ca­tion fa­cil­ity. Mesa County pros­e­cu­tors de­cline to bring crim­i­nal charges in that case, but Grand Junc­tion po­lice place Coyne on em­ploy­ment pro­ba­tion and cut his pay. Coyne says the two had con­sen­sual sex.

Septem­ber 2009: A woman al­leges Coyne raped her in her home. She had sought help for a teenage son, who was thought to be det­o­nat­ing ex­plo­sives in a shed near her home. Coyne kills him­self sev­eral days later af­ter au­thor­i­ties fired him and ar­rested him on a rape charge.
