3 things to watch

Come out firing

Several Denver players said the team’s divisional-round playoff loss to the Colts last year happened because they were looking ahead to the Patriots. Now, with Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back DeAngelo Williams unable to play, Denver’s road to the AFC title game appears to be smooth. A mind-set like last year’s could get Denver beat Sunday. The Broncos need to score early and not let the Steelers keep it close. It would be devastating for the Broncos if they come out flat.

Attack and conquer

Aggression is a huge part of Denver’s defense, and the Broncos will need it Sunday. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger is a wounded warrior, but Denver can’t afford to retreat. Bring the heat and force Roethlisberger to make every throw. Roethlisberger’s pass plays probably will be mostly screens and dump-offs, so the Broncos need to play tight coverage and tackle well. Hard hits, physicality and intensity will turn into takeaways and punts.

Don’t mess up

Peyton Manning has been asked to be a game manager, an unusual role for the five-time MVP. If he takes care of the ball and takes what the defense gives him, the Broncos should advance. Denver’s offensive line has been an issue all season, so look for the Steelers to increase the pressure and send extra blitzers at Manning. The Broncos would be smart to give running backs C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman a lot of work. They should get at least a combined 30 carries.
