-

auckland, new zealand» Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut won the ASB Classic singles title when American opponent Jack Sock was forced to retire with illness while trailing 6-1, 1-0 in Saturday’s final.

Sock said after his 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 semifinal win over top-seed and four-time champion David Ferrer that he came close to withdrawing from that match after waking Friday with “flu-like symptoms.”

Sock’s illness had fully taken hold by the time of the final in hot conditions at the Auckland Tennis Center and he lasted only 28 minutes before being forced to retire.

• Alize Cornet ended Eugenie Bouchard’s strong run at the Hobart International with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Canadian in the final.
