aurora» Grandview’s girls have reached 12-0 and clearly have established a spot among Class 5A’s elite, but coach Josh Ulitzky knows there’s work to be done.

The Wolves, the lone undefeated team in 5A, had no trouble in running past visiting Mullen 70-34 on Wednesday night to move to 5-0 in the Centennial League.

“I think there are some things we need to work on, and we kind of know what’s down the road,” Ulitzky said. “To this point, I certainly feel we’re doing OK, but there are areas we need to work on.”

Grandview, No. 3 in the latest Associated Press 5A media poll behind Highlands Ranch and ThunderRidge, didn’t rebound particularly well against Mullen, Ulitzky noted, and the Mustangs’ box-and-one defense on talented junior Michaela Onyenwere seemed to bother her.

“We’ll need to clean that up,” Ulitzky said. “Give Mullen credit. I was waiting for somebody to do that to her. … She’s doing great, and the other kids stepped up tonight.”

Onyenwere, a 5-foot-11 junior, is versatile and showed it. As her team’s leading scorer (25.7 points per game) and rebounder (11.3), she also played the point on the Wolves’ fullcourt press and frequently led the fast break.

“They definitely had me (for a bit),” Onyenwere said of the Mustangs (7-6, 1-4). “But my teammates stepped up. Now that Mullen has run it, I’m sure others will.”

Onyenwere and Alisha Davis, a freshman, each rolled to 15 points for Grandview. Kennede Brown added 11.

Grandview will host ThunderRidge on Tuesday and take on nearby Regis Jesuit on Feb. 13 in addition to its league schedule. Tough foes await.

“It’s good for us,” Ulitzky said.
