NCAA SAYS OLE MISS VIOLATIONS INCLUDE FOOTBALL PROGRAM

oxford, miss. » The University of Mississipp­i was notified Friday by the NCAA of rules violations involving the Rebels’ football, women’s basketball and track and field programs. Some of the allegation­s regarding the football program date back to previous Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, but others involve current coach Hugh Freeze’s tenure.

The Ole Miss football program has already taken some steps— including the reduction of official visits by recruits— to try to mitigate any punishment from the NCAA.

• Brian Kelly accepted a six- year contract extension to stay on as football coach at Notre Dame through the 2021 season.

• Michigan hiredWarde­Manuel as its athletic director, giving him a fiveyear contract. Before accepting the Michigan job, Manuel was UConn’s athletic director for nearly four years.

Manuel, 47, played football at Michigan when theWolveri­nes were coached by Bo Schembechl­er.

B oxford, ohio » Denver was held in check after Danton Heinen scored the first goal of the game in the first period, and Miami ( Ohio) went on to post a 3- 1 victory over the Pioneers.

Evan Cowley made 27 saves for the Pioneers, who remained in third place in the NCHC with an 8- 5- 2- 0 conference record ( 12- 8- 5 overall).

Mickelson, Day miss the cut

B san diego » Phil Mickelson was expecting to post a low score on the North Course at Torrey Pines on Friday and go into the weekend with a chance to win the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open. By closing with three straight bogeys, the longtime star is home after missing the cut.

Mickelson at least was in good company. Defending champion Jason Day, ranked No. 2 in the world, also missed the cut.

GaryWoodla­nd powered his way to a 5- under- par 67 on the South Course and had a share of the lead with K. J. Choi, who shot a 67 on the North Course. Martin Laird was in third place at 7- under 137.

• Jordan Spieth slipped to five shots off the lead at the Singapore Open when an electrical storm forced secondroun­d play to be abandoned.

Spieth found himself five strokes behind and tied for sixth place after Song Young- han of South Korea capitalize­d on his early start to beat the arrival of the dangerous weather and shoot an 8- under 63, going to the clubhouse leading at 9- under.

• Paul Lawrie earned a two- shot lead at a windy Doha Golf Club to close in on an unpreceden­ted third Qatar Masters tournament title.

The overnight leader started the third round with 13 consecutiv­e pars before making his first birdie on the 14th hole, then picked up another shot on the par- 5 18th to finish with a 2- under 70. He was on top of the leaderboar­d at 13- under, two strokes ahead of Branden Grace.

• Megan Khang shot a 5- under 68 for a share of the lead with England’s Charley Hull and Japan’s Haru Nomura at 8- under 138 in the seasonopen­ing Pure Silk- Bahamas LPGA Classic, her first event as an LPGA Tour member.
