DENVER HOSTEL EVACUATED OVER FIRE CODE
People staying at a youth hostel in Denver’s North Capitol Hill neighborhood were evacuated from the building Tuesday afternoon because of multiple fire code violations.
The Hotel Task Force, made up of staffers from numerous city agencies, was called to the Denver International Youth Hostel, 630 E. 16th Ave., where “numerous serious fire code violations” were found, said Melissa Taylor, a Denver Fire Department spokeswoman.
The American Red Cross and Salvation Army opened a temporary shelter for 48 people displaced by the youth hostel shutdown. Eighty-six people had been staying in the three-story hostel, a privately run business at Washington Street.
Colorado-developed AIDS test gaining ground. A
test that estimates how well a patient has adhered to a prescription drug regimen to prevent HIV transmission, developed at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, now has gained widespread use in research internationally.
The technique measures for traces of antiretroviral drugs in dried blood spots to reveal how much of the medication a patient has used during the past couple of months. Researchers at CU’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences created the method of taking a sample of blood on a paper-like card and measuring for concentrations of the drugs in dried red blood cells.
The drug builds up in the red blood cells only if it is taken consistently, said Pete Anderson, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at CU whose research is supported by the National Institutes of Health. He added that a similar test may have applications for tracking drugs such as those used to treat Hepatitis-C.
Man accused of spraypainting rocks faces charges. A video of a man
spray-painting boulders on Lookout Mountain during the weekend led the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office to a suspect who faces a misdemeanor charge of defacing property.
Investigators found Stanley Stettler, 18, of Thornton after tracking a temporary license plate on a BMW that was captured by the man who used a cellphone to take the video, said Jenny Fulton, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
A witness posted the video on YouTube, and the sheriff’s office subsequently posted it and provided the number of a tip line for people to use if they could identify the vandal.
The man with Stettler, who didn’t write graffiti on anything, wasn’t cited, Fulton said.
The second-degree misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of up to one year in prison and up to a $1,000 fine.
Stettler is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 20.
