NOTRE DAME CB CHARGED WITH FELONY COUNTS
south bend, ind.» A Notre Dame cornerback taken into custody after allegedly punching a police officer and slamming the officer to the ground has been formally charged with felony counts of resisting law enforcement and battery against a public safety official.
The St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office on Tuesday charged cornerback Devin Butler. Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that Butler had been suspended indefinitely from the team. He remains enrolled at the university.
A university spokesman said “any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university.”
Police said in an earlier probable cause affidavit that officers used a stun gun early Saturday to subdue Butler in an altercation outside a bar near campus.
Partial reinstatement
B salt lake city» Utah partially reinstated suspended receiver Cory Butler-Byrd a day after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief for damaging a police car and building last month.
Infractions reported
B columbia, s.c.» South Carolina’s athletic department reported 23 violations of NCAA or Southeastern Conference rules in the past year, nine involving the football team.
All but one of the infractions were classified as Level III and outlined by the NCAA as violations isolated or limited in nature; provide no more than a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage; and do not include more than a minimal impermissible benefit.
South Carolina released its infractions report from an open records request by The Associated Press. The time period is from August 2015 through July.
• Clemson’s athletic department reported 15 violations to the NCAA in the past year, including three by the defending Atlantic Coast Conference football champions.
BYU picks Hill as QB
B provo, utah» Taysom Hill will begin his final year at BYU as the Cougars’ starting quarterback.
Hill, 26, was awarded an extra year of eligibility with a medical exception.
