kabul» Gunmen tried to storm the American University of Afghanista­n here Wednesday after setting off a powerful explosion nearby, sending panicked students at evening classes scrambling for safety on the highly guarded campus in the Afghan capital. The Health Ministry reported late Wednesday that 12 people were killed and 30 were wounded, including a foreign teacher. Students remained trapped inside the campus for more than three hours while Afghan security forces exchanged fire with the gunmen.

Navy says Iranian boats harassed U.S. ship in Strait of Hormuz.

Four Iranian small boats harassed a U.S. Navy warship near the Persian Gulf, but no missiles were fired, the chief of naval operations said Wednesday. Adm. John Richardson said the incident involving the destroyer USS Nitze reflects the greater competitio­n the U.S. is facing at sea. He added it underscore­s the naval tensions with Tehran, which include similar incidents as well as the brief detention in January of 10 U.S. Navy sailors who mistakenly steered into Iranian waters.

boston» Bonnie and Clyde made it quite clear how they felt about a former member of their gang in a letter they sent to him as he sat in the Dallas County Jail. He was a coward, they wrote, and they should have killed him when they had the chance.

The four-page letter to Raymond Hamilton was written in April 1934 in Bonnie Parker’s neat cursive and signed by Clyde Barrow. It could fetch more than $40,000 when it’s sold next month by Boston-based RR Auction.

Jones’ personal website was taken offline Wednesday after it appeared hackers inserted explicit photos of Jones and her driver’s license and passport, as well as images of deceased gorilla Harambe and Jones posing with such stars as Rihanna, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West.

Cruise line CEO details Alaska bear mauling of 2 workers.

The owner of a cruise ship line says a bear that mauled two company wilderness guides during a hiking excursion in southeast Alaska went on the attack so quickly it was over in a matter of seconds.

UnCruise Adventures CEO Dan Blanchard said the attack occurred after the hikers from the cruise vessel Wilderness Explorer rounded a corner and found themselves between the bear and her cub.

The Coast Guard rescued the injured guides, 41-year-old Anna Powers of Hawaii and 26-year-old Michael Justa of Juneau, Alaska.

Paisley Park, home of Prince, opens for public tours Oct. 6

B minneapoli­s » Paisley Park, the private estate and studio complex of the late rock superstar Prince, will open for daily public tours starting Oct. 6, the trust company overseeing his estate announced Wednesday. The company that runs Elvis Presley’s Graceland will manage it.
