BILLS PLACE WR WATKINS ON INJURED RESERVE

- The Associated Press

orchard park, n.y.» The Bills’ top receiving threat Sammy Watkins will miss at least eight weeks resting an injury to his surgically repaired left foot after the team placed him on injured reserve Friday.

The move was announced by the Bills a few hours after coach Rex Ryan expressed “major concern” of Watkins potentially missing significant time.

Watkins won’t require surgery and will instead use the time off to rest the injury.

The Bills had already ruled out Watkins from playing at New England on Sunday. Watkins also missed last weekend’s game against Arizona and has been sidelined since a teammate stepped on his foot during a walk-through session last week.

Buffalo’s first-round pick in the 2014 draft missed much of the offseason after having two screws inserted into his foot to repair a stress fracture in April. Watkins has been limited to just six catches for 63 yards in two games.

Chiefs’ Charles questionable

B kansas city, mo.» The Chiefs listed Jamaal Charles as questionable for Sunday night’s game at Pittsburgh, while fellow running back Charcandrick West has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said how well Charles comes out of the final practice of the week would dictate whether he makes his season debut. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has not played since Week 5 last season, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The other running backs on the active roster are Spencer Ware and Knile Davis.

Kansas City could also be relying on a makeshift secondary against Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown & Co. Phillip Gaines is questionable with a knee injury and fellow cornerback Marcus Peters missed two practices this week with the flu, though he was a full participant in Friday’s workout.

Browns move on from Josh Gordon

B berea, ohio» The Browns have personal compassion for Josh Gordon. They’re done with him professionally.

A day after the troubled wide receiver said he’s entering rehab for an unspecified condition, Cleveland coach Hue Jackson said the team intends to “move on” from Gordon.

“What we need to do is just close that chapter right now,” Jackson said. “He’s doing what he needs to do, and we need to do what we need to do, which is continue to move forward.”

One of the NFL’s most talented young players, Gordon, who has been suspended for 30 of the Browns past 35 games, announced Thursday that he’s stepping away from football to focus on getting his life together. The 25-year-old was scheduled to return from his latest four-game suspension next week and possibly play on Oct. 9 against New England.

However, Gordon has chosen to put his career on hold to work on an unidentified addiction.

Footnote.

Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was fined $48,620 for his unnecessary roughness foul on Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard. Also from that game, Giants center Weston Richburg was docked $12,154 for his unsportsmanlike conduct after being ejected.
