RANTANEN IS LIKELY TO REJOIN TEAM NEXT WEEKEND

- Mike Chambers, The Denver Post

tampa, fla.» Young forward Mikko Rantanen is scheduled to be recalled by the Avalanche next week and make his NHL season debut Oct. 28 against the visiting Winnipeg Jets, Colorado general manager Joe Sakic said Thursday from Amalie Arena.

Rantanen, 19, started the season with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League in what essentially is a conditioning assignment. He suffered a preseason ankle injury, and the Avs wanted him to continue his recovery in the minors.

Rantanen has played in San Antonio’s first two games and is expected to play in the next three before his call-up. He was the Avs’ 2015 first-round draft pick and the 2015-16 AHL

No goal. In Colorado’s 4-0 win Thursday, the Lightning was trailing 2-0 when it appeared to score off a redirection that landed behind goalie Semyon Varlamov. But the play was offside, and Varlamov heard the whistle. He still tried to play the puck, naturally, but he knew it wouldn’t count.

“I knew immediately there’s no goal. There’s no way,” Varlamov said.

Footnotes. Bednar has not announced Saturday’s starter in goal against the Panthers, but Varlamov has put together backto-back outstanding performances. … Winger Rene Bourque is out with a minor groin injury. He was replaced in the lineup by Smith, who was scratched for the first time Tuesday at Washington. … Andreas Martinsen’s goal came off Joe Colborne’s dumpin. The puck bounced awkwardly off the boards when goalie Ben Bishop was behind the net, expecting to play it after rimming out of the corner. Martinsen cashed in on an open net. “That’s a snipe,” Martinsen joked. “I was ready to go on the forecheck. I was thinking defense and it suddenly lands on my stick. More of those please.”
