Gucci Mane, “Woptober”

- — Ru Johnson

Gucci Mane’s stint in prison saw the rise of near-identical clones of the rapper, like Waka Flocka, Future, Lil Yachty and Young Thug. On “Woptober,” Mane proves not only that he hasn’t lost a step, but also how squarely his imitators stand in his shadow. It’s refreshing to hear the king reclaim his throne on “Bling Blaww Burr” with Chicago’s Young Dolph as he once again shouts out his native Atlanta. “Woptober” is a good time for Mane, the rare modern rapper who does well to simply sound like himself.
