washington» Civil rights groups called for President-elect Donald Trump to forcefully and publicly denounce racism and bigotry. In the 10 days following the November election, the Southern Poverty Law Center said it collected 867 hate-related incidents on its website and through the media from almost every state, with Hawaii, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota the only exceptions.

Tuesday received only his third top-secret intelligen­ce briefing since his election three weeks ago. The relatively few briefings stand in contrast with Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who is getting nearly daily briefings. Most modern day president-select have intelligen­ce officials brief them nearly every day on the contents of the President’s Daily Brief, the highest-level intelligen­ce document produced in the United States.

Carrier says it has deal with Trump to keep jobs in Indiana B

washington» Air conditioni­ng company Carrier said Tuesday that it had reached a deal with Trump to keep nearly 1,000 jobs in Indiana. Trump and Vice Presidente­lect Mike Pence planned to travel to the state Thursday to unveil the agreement alongside company officials. Trump spent much of his campaign pledging to keep companies such as Carrier from moving jobs overseas. His focus on manufactur­ing jobs contribute­d to his unexpected appeal with working-class voters in states such as Michigan, which has long voted for Democrats in presidenti­al elections.

Miners could lose benefits. About 12,500 former

union miners and their families have been told their health benefits will lapse come Jan. 1, and an additional 10,000 are in danger of losing benefits at a later date. Congress could intervene, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has blocked previous efforts to address the crisis and has yet to commit to passing the legislatio­n before Congress adjourns next month.

Obama declines to send official delegation to Castro funeral.

President Barack Obama has decided not to send a presidenti­al delegation to Havana for the funeral of Fidel Castro, Cuba’s former leader who was one of the United State’s staunchest Cold War enemies. Instead of an official delegation, the White House will send one of the president’s top foreign policy advisers and its top diplomat.

battle creek, mich.» Kellogg has announced that it will no longer advertise on Breitbart.com, the website formerly run by one of Trump’s top aides, Steve Bannon. The food manufactur­er decided to discontinu­e advertisin­g on the site as soon as it was alerted by consumers to the presence of its ads.
