WOMAN GETS 24 YEARS IN DEADLY HIT-AND-RUN

colorado springs» A woman was sentenced Monday to 24 years in prison for hitting and killing a pedestrian with a car in Fountain and fleeing the scene. The Gazette reports 29-year-old Rebecca Champigny was sentenced for the March 2015 death of 66-year-old Jenny Carrillo. Investigat­ors say Champigny was trying to pass another car that had stopped for pedestrian­s when she hit Carrillo in the parking lot of a Walmart. Champigny, who also hit two other cars, was accused of stealing the vehicle from her parents.

On Monday, she asked for forgivenes­s and promised to keep the Carrillo family in her prayers, saying, “I am honestly so sorry for my choices that has taken a loved one.”

Youth correction­s officer charged with child sex assault in Denver. A

youth correction­s officer was charged with sexually assaulting two juveniles in custody at the Gilliam Youth Detention Center. Armando Torres, 25, is charged with sexual assault on a child and two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, according to the Denver district attorney. Torres, who has been placed on leave, is a correction­al youth security officer at the center.

Man pleads guilty to flooding jail B

aspen» A 32-year-old man who flooded the Pitkin County Jail this summer and then fought with sheriff ’s deputies pleaded guilty Monday to two felonies. Benjamin Garrett faces up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to felony drug possession and criminal mischief. Garrett also pleaded guilty to misdemeano­r assault, which could land him up to two years in the same jail he flooded. Garrett might have to pay more than $225,000 restitutio­n, the cost of the damage, to the jail.

Pair charged with firstdegre­e murder in home invasion B

adams county» Prosecutor­s on Tuesday charged two Limon men in an Adams County home invasion last week. Ronnie Williams, 35, and Corey Carrol, 25, are suspected of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and four counts of aggravated robbery.

The men — who are also accused of a crime of violence as a sentence enhancer — are accused of fatally shooting 55-yearold Steven Kent on Dec. 8 at his home on the 16400 block of Tucson Street near Brighton.

Handcuffed jail inmate escapes, steals vehicle, is caught B

westminste­r» A handcuffed inmate facing a charge of animal cruelty escaped from officers while being taken to court Tuesday, fleeing in a stolen vehicle before being caught. The escape happened at about 9:20 a.m. as Josh Dopheide was being taken from the Jefferson County Jail to Westminste­r Municipal Courts, police said.

Despite being handcuffed, Dopheide was able to steal a vehicle from a neighborho­od near the courts, police said. The vehicle was spotted near West 120th Avenue and Tejon Street. Dopheide then tried to steal another vehicle but was taken back into custody at about 10 a.m., police said. Dopheide now faces charges of escape, motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, reckless driving and robbery.
