Let Coloradans vote on raising taxes for highways
Re: “A GOP roadblock on highway funds,” Feb. 14 editorial.
As if to further solidify their reputation as the party of “no,” Republicans in the Colorado legislature, led by Senate President Kevin Grantham, are refusing to advance a referendum to voters regarding a tax increase to generate much-needed funding for highways.
This intransigence belies GOP rhetoric emphasizing job creation and economic growth that is always prevalent prior to elections. A properly constructed and well-maintained highway system is a vital component for an economy that relies heavily on tourism and requires convenient, safe access to alpine recreational areas.
Furthermore, the TABOR amendment, forever cherished by conservatives, was designed to allow tax measures to be decided by voters, not by obstructionists in the legislature. So refer the issue to the electorate. The only beneficiaries of a pockmarked, decaying infrastructure are tire salesmen and alignment mechanics. Frank Tapy, Denver
