COMPHER FINDS FAMILIAR SETTING

-

chicago» J.T. Compher’s first tour across the NHL has included plenty of familiar faces. Sunday in Chicago, the theme became familiar places.

Avs center Compher is a native of Northbrook, Ill., about 20 miles north of the United Center. He grew up playing for the elite junior program Team Illinois before leaving for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at age 16.

Compher did not make his hometown professional debut — that was last month against the Chicago Wolves of the AHL — but playing his 10th NHL game against the Blackhawks was a benchmark for a rookie who grew up idolizing Jonathan Toews.

“I’ve got some friends and family coming out,” Compher said. “Should be a fun game.”

So far, Compher has played a number of past teammates in his young NHL career. He scored his first NHL goal Wednesday against Detroit and former Michigan teammate Dylan Larkin. Saturday, Compher played his final game at Joe Louis Arena, which will close at the end of the season. The arena was a regular stop during Compher’s three seasons as a Wolverine.

Compher played with Chicago’s Ryan Hartman and John Hayden in the national program.

“It’s nice having other guys doing well in the league,” Compher said. “I still keep in contact with a lot of guys from Michigan, just being friendly and giving me tips and stuff for my first couple weeks in the league.”
