How independent is your car?
For years, cars have not been independent. But as brake assist and other automatic features rolled out, the Society of Automotive Engineers decided to make official definitions of autonomy: Level 0: Human driver does everything. Level 1: Vehicle can sometimes assist the human driver, including cruise control. Level 2: Vehicle does some driving, but human must monitor and do most of the driving. This includes most of today’s available semi-autonomous systems. Level 3: Vehicle does some driving, but human must be ready to take back control. Instead of just steering to stay within a lane, the car could decide to change lanes and pass a slower moving car. Level 4: Vehicle can drive and monitor the driving environment but only in known environments, such as a campus. Level 5: Vehicle can perform all driving tasks in all the same conditions a human can. No interior steering wheel or brake pad needed. Source: The Society of Automotive Engineers
