Anyone doing chile rellenos for breakfast is A-OK in our book.

Cochino Taco, the Squeaky Bean-owned, Englewood taqueria and Mexican joint, isn’t afraid to add a little quirk to the first meal of the day. And we, hungry for a respite from pancakes, scrambles and, yes, even breakfast burritos, appreciate it.

Cochino’s newly launched brunch menu attempts clever spins on breakfast classics. Take the Chicken and Churros, for example, a play on the ubiquitous chicken and waffles that mostly succeeds.

Our favorite dish is the Cohino Chile Relleno ($12), a fried poblano pepper packed with asadero cheese and topped with two eggs, crispy onions and potatoes. The winning touch is the pool of green chile it swims in, and when you get a bite of all four components at once, it’s pretty darned good.

The Carnitas Arepas Benedictas ($12) is also clever, subbing arepas (a corn-based flatbread popular in Central and South America) for traditional English muffins. The Serrano hollandaise gives just a hint of kick, and carnitas is a very worthy meat alternative to the typical ham.

The brunch cocktail menu is actually longer than that for the food, and with no drink costing more than $6.50 (except for one designed to serve 2-4 people), you can try a couple. We like The Santeria ($6) with rum, chile liqueur and horchata and the Frozen Blood Orange Bellini ($6.50) that blends sparkling wine, peach liqueur and fruit purees.
