PEDROIA TO HAVE MRI ON HURT LEG

-

It seems the Manny Machado Dustin Pedroia affair will impact the Red Sox even after they leave Baltimore.

Pedroia was out of Boston’s lineup for a second consecutive game Sunday after being taken out by a hard, spikes-high slide by Machado in the eighth inning Friday night.

Pedroia continued to experience swelling in his left ankle and surgically repaired left knee and will undergo an MRI on Monday.

The test will be administered “just to rule anything out,” Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters before Sunday’s series finale at Baltimore.

“There was legitimate concern in the moment it took place,” Farrell told reporters. “But the fact that he still has the symptoms he does, we’re going to rule everything out. His importance to us speaks for itself. And with any of our players, you get into a situation like this, you give it a 24- to 48-hour period to see how it responds. And at this point it warrants a further look.”

Pedroia hobbled off the field and left Friday night’s game. Initial word from the training room was that Pedroia had avoided serious injury, and the Red Sox were hopeful their de facto captain wouldn’t need to go on the disabled list.

In Pedroia’s absence Sunday, Marco Hernandez made a second consecutive start at second base.

Tigers’ Jones feels “lucky.”

Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones required nine stitches to repair a cut on his lip after he was hit in the face by a fastball Saturday, but he didn’t lose any teeth and feels “lucky” he didn’t get hurt worse.

“My teeth still hurt, but they said everything was intact and they were still there,” Jones told reporters, according to MLB.com. “I still have to get a CT scan when I get back to Detroit. Everything feels normal. I can bite down. It’s just my lip. (My) teeth are sore, but other than that, it just feels like I got punched in the face.

“It could’ve knocked out all my teeth or struck me square in the eye. I am lucky it hit me in my big lip and just made it bigger. It’s all good.”

M’s designate CF Martin.

Struggling center fielder Leonys Martin was designated for assignment by the Mariners, two days after he was benched.

In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled first baseman Dan Vogelbach from Triple-A Tacoma. He is expected to platoon at first base with Danny Valencia.

Jays’ Gibbons gets heave-ho.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected Sunday for arguing with home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus during the third inning of a game against the Angels.

Gibbons was angered when Kole Calhoun was awarded first base after what De Jesus apparently deemed to be an illegal quick pitch from Marcus Stroman. The Associated Press
