Frontier starts service to seven markets, restores other routes

- By Jesse Paul

Frontier Airlines announced Monday that it has begun new, nonstop service in seven markets over the past week and returned its summer seasonal routes in nearly 40 markets across the U.S.

That includes 14 cites that can be reached from Denver International Airport this summer, including: Pittsburgh; Cleveland; Bismarck, N.D.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit; Greensboro, N.C.; Knoxville, Tenn.; New York’s LaGuardia Airport; Raleigh–Durham International Airport; Sioux Falls, S.D. ;and Washington Dulles International Airport.

Frontier says it will also reinstate nonstop flights from Denver to Bozeman, Mont., on April 30 and Missoula, Mont., on April 28.

The Denver-based, lowcost airline is offering fares starting at $20 to ring in the service changes, which come as the carrier has filed paperwork to launch an initial public offering. The airline is also working to rely less on Denver International Airport for its operations.

In December 2013, more than 90 percent of Frontier flights originated or ended in Denver. In December 2016, that number had fallen to about 45 percent. In 2015, Frontier asked the city for permission to give up six of its 14 gates at DIA in an effort to “right size” operations at its hometown hub.

“People’s travel patterns change in the summer as families plan trips throughout the country,” Josh Flyr, Frontier’s vice president of network and revenue, said in a written statement. “The start of these new and seasonal flights now give families a great low-price option to make their summer vacation travel plans.”

The new Frontier markets include the following routes:

•Austin, Texas, to Washington Dulles International Airport • Austin to San Diego • Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to San Antonio

• Cincinnati to Minneapolis

• Cincinnati to New York’s LaGuardia Airport

• Cleveland to Charlotte, N.C

•Cleveland to Minneapolis Frontier says its flights between Austin and both San Diego and Washington, D.C., are scheduled to operate year-round.

The airline also will bring back summer seasonal service between Atlanta and Austin, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Miami, St. Louis, San Antonio and Kansas City, Mo.

Chicago’s O’Hare also will have summer flights to Austin and Trenton, N.J.

From Atlanta, Frontier will fly to Cincinnati, Dallas/Fort Worth; Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Philadelphia.

Frontier has brought back service from Cleveland to Los Angeles; Portland, Ore; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; Seattle and San Francisco.

From Philadelphia, Frontier has brought back service to Kansas City, Mo.; Milwaukee; St. Augustine, Fla.; and San Antonio.

Frontier has also brought back seasonal service between Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and San Francisco.
