COLORADO STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS JUCO TRANSFER
fort collins» The Colorado State men’s basketball team has added junior college transfer Alonzo Tyson to its roster for the 2017-18 season.
Tyson, a 6-foot-9 forward, joins the Rams after playing for Cape Fear Community College (N.C.). He will be able to play for CSU immediately, with two years of eligibility left.
“We are very excited about Alonzo,” Rams coach Larry Eustachy said in a news release. “He brings a shotblocking dimension that I don’t think we have had in my time here.”
Tyson played two years with the Sea Devils for coach Ryan Mantlo, a former CSU assistant. He started 50 of the 63 games he played in, averaging 14.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots as a sophomore. His per-game averages his freshman season were 12.9, 7.6 and 1.2.
Former No. 1 pick Long retires
B minneapolis» Jake Long, the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft and a four-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle with the Miami Dolphins, decided to retire after a torn Achilles tendon ended his ninth NFL season early with the Minnesota Vikings.
• The New Orleans Saints and freeagent running back Adrian Peterson are negotiating a contract. Negotiations ramped up over the weekend.
• The Buffalo Bills decided not to match New England’s offer sheet to running back Mike Gillislee, making him a member of the Patriots for two years and $6.4 million overall, including $4 million due in the first year of the contract. The Bills had five days to match the Patriots’ offer sheet.
• The Cincinnati Bengals plan to hold on to backup quarterback AJ McCarron rather than trade him to a team that would offer the Alabama product a bigger role. McCarron was a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft.
• Veteran linebacker Will Compton re-signed with the Washington Redskins.
Fitzgerald’s contract extended.
Northwestern rewarded football coach Pat Fitzgerald with a new contract that runs through 2026.
The 42-year-old Fitzgerald, a former Big Ten Conference defensive player of the year and All-America linebacker at Northwestern, has been the head coach at his alma mater since 2006. He is 77-62 with the Wildcats, including seven bowl appearances and two bowl victories.

The event, created by former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry, brings together the leaders of the state’s Front Range college football teams.
Speakers at the event will include DeBerry, Colorado State’s Mike Bobo, Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, Colorado’s Mike MacIntyre, Northern Colorado’s Earnest Collins Jr. and CSUPueblo’s John Wristen.
