VEEP PRAISES PRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP

grove city, pa. » Vice President Mike Pence urged graduating students at a Pennsylvan­ia college to become leaders and cited President Donald Trump’s “leadership and perseveran­ce” as an example.

“If you aspire to lead, you’ll need courage, because leadership brings both honor and opposition,” Pence told hundreds of graduates and their families Saturday at the Grove City College commenceme­nt.

Grove City is a private, Christian liberal arts collegewit­h about 2,500 students, about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Pence cited Trump as “an example of leadership and perseveran­ce” to applause from the crowd.

WWII vet gets delayed Bronze Star ● aiken, s. c. » Aworldwar II veteran has received the Bronze Star he was awarded 73 years ago for his service in an American-canadian commando unit.

The State newspaper reported that Pfc. James R. “Boots” Beatty of Barney, Ga., served in the 1st Special Service Force. The unit is considered the first commando unit, predecesso­rs of today’s Army Rangers, Green Berets and Navy SEALS.

On Saturday, the 96year-old Beatty received his Bronze Star during a special surprise presentati­on at his home in Aiken. His son-in-law, Jimhamilto­n, said Beatty never picked up his medal because, like other soldiers, he wanted to get away from the events of the war.

Family members also presented Beatty with seven other decoration­s and recognitio­ns he had won but lost during his many moves in the 1950s.

Random, fatal stabbing on Md. campus ● college park, md. » Police say a student was fatally stabbed at the University ofmaryland campus in what appears to be a random attack.

Local news media outlets reported that the Bowie State University student was with two friends at the College Park campus around 3 a.m. Saturday when a University of Maryland student walked up and stabbed him in the chest.

Police say the attack was random and unprovoked and that the victim and suspect didn’t know each other.

Texans steal hearse, dump body ● bryan, texas » Police in Texas have arrested two people for allegedly stealing a hearse from outside a fastfood restaurant and dumping a body that was inside.

Bryan police say the hearse was recovered Friday a few hours after the driver stopped at a restaurant and left the hearse unattended. The body and the gurney it was on were dumped along a rural road a few miles from the restaurant.

Officers on the lookout for the hearse saw it in Brazos County and stopped it.

Police say a man and a woman are charged with unauthoriz­ed use of a motor vehicle. The woman is also charged with abuse of a corpse.

Make-a-wish child gets trip to Cuba ● jersey city, n. j. » Make-a-wish New Jersey has surprised an 11-year-old lymphoma patient with a trip to Cuba.

Tyler Machado thought he was heading to the doctor’s office Friday morning. But he instead was greeted with a red carpet leading to a stretch limou- sine.

Tyler is the first child from the United States to go to Cuba through MakeA-wish since the travel ban was lifted under the Obama administra­tion.

Tyler’s mother said her son is a “family person” who has always wanted to go to Cuba to meet his grandparen­ts. Her son said he was happy before heading out on his six-day trip.

The communicat­ions director formake-a-wish said the foundation is working on trips to Cuba for other children throughout the U.S.
