Final hurdle an added obstacle
The final hurdle wreaked havoc Saturday at the state track and field championships at Jeffco Stadium. In four finals of the 300 meter hurdles— three boys races and one girls race— a complete fall or a stumble on the race’s final obstacle cost a runner a championship just steps from the finish line. “On the last one, you’re just thinking, ‘OK, I’m almost done,’ ” said Hinkley’s Angel Heredia, who captured the 5A title after Cherokee Trail’s Kellen Monestime clipped the final hurdle. “That’s when it gets you.”
Cody wins title, misses meet record
Pueblo South junior Jeremy Cody won the 4A boys high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 9 inches. Having already secured the title, Cody narrowly missed an attempt at 7 feet, which would have set a meet record. “I felt like I had it,” Cody said. “I had the height. I just hit it with my thigh. I’m still so happy.” Norman smashes 16-year-old record Tanner Norman, a senior at Classical Academy, set a 3A state meet record in the 3,200 run with a time of 9:14.45. His time smashed the 16-yearold mark of 9:18.38, set by Denver Christian’s Brett Schoolmeester.
Hogan hopes to add to triple-jump title Jequan Hogan, a junior at Fountain-fort Carson, won the 5A triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 7.25 inches, a key result for the Trojans as they attempt to win the 18th track and field title in school history. Hogan will try to add titles Sunday in the long jump and the high jump.
Williams gets his shot at first
Donovan Williams finished second in the 5A 200 as a junior last season, finishing 0.3 of a second behind teammate Christian Lyon. Williams got his title Saturday, but it didn’t come easy. His time of 21.63 was only 0.03 seconds ahead of Hinkley’s Darrien Wells.
