DENVER EAST STAR PULLS OFF ANOTHER SWEEP IN 5A SPRINTS

lakewood» Denver East sophomore Arria Minor swept the Class 5A sprints for the second consecutiv­e year. Her wins Sunday were in the 100 (11.53) and 400 (53.30) meters, adding to her victory in the 200 on Saturday. Minor now has six individual state titles in her young prep career. “Yesterday, I was really dehydrated and a little dizzy. But I made sure to take care of myself last night and into today,” Minor said after her final race. “The winning is nice, but as usual, I’m just focused on my own progress.”

Grandview, Air Academy win first team titles. Each program ran away

with its first state title — Grandview topped runner-up Fort Collins in 5A, while Air Academy bested runnerup Niwot in 4A. In 3A, The Classical Academy (last season’s 4A champion) captured its 10th team title — ranked second all time behind Mullen’s 11 crowns — while Paonia won its fifth straight 2A title and Springfiel­d won 1A for the school’s first girls team title. Sloan rebounds, wins 100-meter hurdles. After Emily Sloan clipped the final hurdle and fell in Saturday’s 300 hurdles race — a mistake that potentiall­y cost her not only a state record in the event but the 5A championsh­ip as well — the Rock Canyon sensation bounced back Sunday with a championsh­ip in the 100 hurdles. Her time of 13.58 is the best mark for a junior in the entire nation, according to MileSplit. Cherokee Trail holds off Denver East in 4x100. In a rematch of last year’s dramatic 4x100 relay finals in 5A — when Cherokee Trail held off anchor Minor and Denver East by 0.04 of a second — the Cougars again emerged victorious this year as Jaiden Paris, Taylor Watson, Chian Deloach and Sydnee Larkin turned in a title-winning time of 47.48 to defeat the Angels’ time of 47.71. Larkin also repeated as champion in the triple jump with Saturday’s 36-10½ mark.

Koopman claims another 5A long jump crown. Fort Collins senior Audra

Koopman launched her way to a second consecutiv­e 5A long jump title with a leap of 19-0½. It’s the fourth consecutiv­e year the Penn State pledge landed on the podium in the event. She posted a runner-up finish in 2014 and had a thirdplace finish in 2015.

McDonald sets 5A record in discus.

After winning her second consecutiv­e shot put championsh­ip Saturday, Rocky Mountain junior Gabriella McDonald topped herself Sunday with a 5A state meet-record toss of 154-4 in the discus en route to the title in that event. It was the Colorado State commit’s first championsh­ip in the discus, following runner-up finishes as a sophomore and junior.
