Appreciating mixed marriage

-

Re: “1 in 6 newlywed spouses is different ethnicity, race,” May 19 news story.

I appreciate the article about the large number of mixed ethnic and racial marriages in the U.S. We Americans have always done this, and I’m hoping it spells the end of racism.

My own North German family has, in three generations, come to include Jews, Hispanics, East Indians, African-Americans, Swedes, Lebanese, old colonial English, and a couple of adoptees we just guess about.

If religion gets in the way, we dump the religion. We produce beautiful children (shaking up the gene pool is a good thing). Trips abroad to ancestral homelands remind us how happily 100 percent American we are (nice to visit, but we would never want to live there).

I was surprised at the number of people polled still nervous about intermarriage. Get over it, the future has arrived. Richard Opler, Parker
