Guns and last week’s shooting at a congressional baseball practice

Re: “Congressman critical; gunman was in ‘Terminate GOP’ group,” June 15 news story.

The horrible shooting of a congressman and others in Virginia again raises questions about gun policies in the U.S.

Pro-gun people often suggest that we would be better off if everyone were armed. Say that we all started to carry high-powered weapons. Do we really think that those set on killing people would not adapt? We have watched as terrorists have adapted and changed their methods to kill and maim. Once airlines became more secure, they resorted to driving through crowds, creating bombs in backpacks, and strapping suicide vests to themselves. I suspect that individuals such as the Virginia shooter who wants to exact terror will do the same.

Unless our country and political leaders can actually work together to study and address violence in our society, we will all need to accept this reality of life in the U.S.A. No level of arming ourselves will improve our country. Pam Lacey, Denver

I think everyone agrees that these shootings may prove to be a turning point in our country. We all have to compromise to find a middle ground between the two parties.

From what I heard and saw in 24 hours after the shooting, it appears that both parties see the benefit of that. The American people are polarized like never before, and I believe that message starts at the top.

Someone please convey to Donald Trump that his impulsive, childish tweets and comments not only do a disservice to the American people but to him as well. Gain some self-control, put away your phone and do your job. Ellen Haverl, Denver

As a Bernie Sanders supporter, I am irked by media reporting that liberals are inciting violence. I believe to the contrary — that all groups I work with are Gandhi-like and protest in peace. Since the election season, our president is the one who has used rhetoric that has incited those who may be “on the fringe of sanity” to perform acts of violence, hatred, etc. Sanders has never condoned violence. Let’s just say there are nuts in all political parties. Our leaders need to lead by example and words. Sandy Reavey, Denver
