COBURN, SIMPSON QUALIFY FOR TEAM REPRESENTI­NG U.S.

Former Colorado Buffs Emma Coburn and Jenny Simpson won their events at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championsh­ips Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., and qualified for the team that will represent the U.S. at the biennial world championsh­ips in London this summer.

Coburn, a bronze medalist in the steeplecha­se at the Rio Olympics, won Saturday’s race easily in nine minutes, 20.28 seconds for her sixth U.S. title. Simpson, a former world champion in the 1,500 meters who claimed bronze in Rio, won in 4:06.33. Also making the worlds team in the 1,500 meters was former Buff Sara Vaughn, a mother of three who finished third in 4:07.85.

Buena Vista product Mason Finley won the discus with a throw of 206 feet, nine inches. Denver East grad David Oliver, who won the 110-meter hurdles at the 2013 world championsh­ips, qualified for Sunday’s semifinals.

Team Penske tightens its grip

elkhart lake, wis.» Team Penske will have a strangleho­ld on the first two rows in the IndyCar race at Road America.

Helio Castroneve­s won the pole, turning a lap in 1 minute, 41.30 seconds at 142.649 mph. It was his 50th career pole, and third of the season.

Castroneve­s edged teammate Will Power by 0.06 seconds. Power won the race last year at the rural Wisconsin road course.

Oracle Team USA gets first win

hamilton, bermuda» Jimmy Spithill skippered Oracle Team USA to its first victory in the 35th America’s Cup, taking a thriller in Race 6 on the Great Sound to slow Emirates Team New Zealand’s momentum.

Oracle Team USA won by 11 seconds, the closest margin in the firstto-seven match, to cut the Kiwis’ lead to 4-1. Team New Zealand has won five races but began with a negative point because Oracle won qualifiers.

Federer makes his 140th final

london» Roger Federer defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the final of the Gerry Weber Open for the 11th time on Saturday.

Federer will bid for his 92nd career title in what will be his 140th final against the fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, who rallied to beat Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 for his seventh title-decider.

• Marin Cilic and Feliciano Lopez recovered from having their serves broken for the first time this week to secure returns to the final of the Queen’s grass-court tournament.

Cilic, the 2012 champion, ended Gilles Muller’s seven-match winning run on grass with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory in the first semifinal.

Lopez then gained a measure of revenge for his loss to Grigor Dimitrov in the 2014 final by beating the Bulgarian 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Kvitova advances to final

birmingham, england» Twotime Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova beat Lucie Safarova in the Aegon Classic semifinals to reach the first final since her playing hand was injured in a knife attack at her home.

This is Kvitova’s first grass-court final since her triumph at 2014 Wimbledon, though this significan­t achievemen­t was tinged with anti-climax as Safarova quit with a right thigh strain after only eight games. Kvitova was leading 6-1, 1-0.

Kvitova, neverthele­ss, hit her groundstro­kes with pace and accuracy, especially from the forehand side.

The Czech leftie will play Ashleigh Barty in the final. Barty contained former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Ronaldo leads Portugal to semis

st. petersburg, russia» Cristiano Ronaldo’s 75th internatio­nal goal helped lift Portugal to a comfortabl­e 4-0 win over New Zealand and into the Confederat­ions Cup semifinals.
