FIRE FORCES EVACUATION­S

A fire in Park County that forced the evacuation of some campers Saturday was 50 percent contained Sunday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The 392 fire is burning on 90 acres nearly 10 miles northeast of the Town of Como, and campers were evacuated from County Road 39.

“The lines held overnight, and fire behavior this morning is not very much compared to last night,” said Greg Heule, spokesman for the Pike & San Isabel National Forests.

Firefighte­rs continue to secure a fire line and mop up hot spots. There is still isolated torching of heavy fuels inside the fire perimeter.

Tornadoes hit Walsh.

Tornadoes and hail hit the southeaste­rn Colorado town of Walsh on Sunday afternoon, breaking windows, knocking out power, ripping up roofs and tearing down trees.

Baca County sheriff ’s dispatcher Moriah McNeill said three tornadoes touched down inside the town (population 524) shortly after 3:30 p.m. Hail as big as golf balls pelted buildings, causing damage, McNeill said.

No serious injuries were reported.

Walsh is located 20 miles east of Springfiel­d. Tornadoes also may have hit east of Walsh, weather service officials said, but only in unpopulate­d areas.

Colorado Supreme Court upholds conviction. Colorado’s

highest court has upheld the murder conviction­s of a Colorado Springs woman who let her three children burn to death in the hopes of cashing in on an insurance payoff.

The Gazette reported that Deborah Nicholls was arrested on murder charges following a grand jury indictment in November 2007, four years after the deadly blaze took the lives of 3-year-old Sierra, 5-yearold Sophia and 11-year-old Jay Nicholls. She and her husband, Timothy Nicholls, were addicted to methamphet­amine and deep in debt when he set their home in the Village Seven neighborho­od aflame, jurors learned during his 2007 trial.

Man arrested in mosque attack skips court ●

fort collins» A former Army medic accused of breaking glass doors and throwing a Bible into a Colorado mosque has been arrested after skipping another court appearance.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported 35-year-old Joseph Giaquinto was arrested Saturday, a day after he was set to appear at the Larimer County Justice Center. It’s the second time he has missed a scheduled court appearance since his March arrest.
