LEDECKY, ADRIAN STEAL OPENING SWIM SHOW AT NATIONALS

indianapol­is» Olympic gold medalists Katie Ledecky and Nathan Adrian qualified for the American world championsh­ip team Tuesday night as each won signature events at the U.S. national championsh­ips.

Ledecky easily claimed the women’s 800-meter freestyle title in a time of 8 minutes, 11.50 seconds. The defending Olympic and world champion won by 8.96 seconds over Leah Smith.

Adrian reclaimed the men’s 100 free title in 47.96 seconds, beating Caeleb Dressel by 0.01.

Each winner makes the team. Second-place finishers are likely to be added when the selection process ends.

Mallory Comerford defeated American record-holder Simone Manuel in the women’s 100 free. But it took the world’s third-fastest time of the year, 52.81, to win.

Hali Flickinger and Jack Conger claimed the 200 butterfly titles, and True Sweetser won the men’s 1,500 free.

Review coming on sports betting

● washington» The Supreme Court agreed to take up New Jersey’s bid to allow sports betting at its casinos and racetracks, a case that could lead other states to seek a share of the lucrative market.

The justices will review a lower court ruling against the state, which is hoping to capture some of the estimated $150 billion that is illegally wagered on sports each year.

Phone retrieval ends in gunshots

● nashville, tenn.» Two Vanderbilt football players were shot in what police are calling an “ill-conceived plan” to recover a teammate’s stolen cellphone.

Tae Daley, 18, suffered a noncritica­l gunshot wound to his leg, and Frank Coppet, 18, received noncritica­l birdshot wounds to his arms, Nashville police said in a statement. Detectives were working to identify and arrest the shooters.

Parents push for girls football

● salt lake city» The parents of six Utah high school students filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against three school districts that don’t have a girls football team.

The parents claim the districts are discrimina­ting against female students by not having a football team.

One of the girls whose parents are involved in the suit formed the Utah Girls Tackle Football League in 2015. The league attracted 50 girls in its first year and had 200 girls participat­e this year.

Ogwumike leads Sparks to win

● uncasville, conn.» Nneka Ogwumike scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Connecticu­t Sun 87-79.

• In another WNBA game, Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points, Kristi Toliver made three of Washington’s 10 3-pointers, and the Mystics beat the Seattle Storm 100-70.

FC Dallas defeats Rapids

● frisco, texas» FC Dallas’ defense of its U.S. Open Cup crown remained unblemishe­d with a 3-1 win over the Rapids, thanks to a goals from Mauro Diaz and Ryan Hollingshe­ad, two mainstays who returned from injury.

Argentine playmaker Diaz put the hosts on the board first after drawing a foul in the box in the 44th minute by Colorado midfielder Bismark Boateng.
