In­jured Edge­wa­ter po­lice of­fi­cer moved out of ICU

An Edge­wa­ter po­lice of­fi­cer who suf­fered a heart at­tack dur­ing a strug­gle with a DUI sus­pect has been moved out of in­ten­sive care, au­thor­i­ties said Fri­day.

Cpl. Michael Nes­bitt is re­cu­per­at­ing but re­mains in the hos­pi­tal, ac­cord­ing to a news re­lease from Jenny Ful­ton, spokes­woman for the Jef­fer­son County Sher­iff’s Depart­ment.

“He and his fam­ily wish to thank every­one for their sup­port and pos­i­tive thoughts and prayers,” ac­cord­ing to a state­ment re­leased by the Edge­wa­ter Po­lice Depart­ment.

Nes­bitt had suf­fered re­s­pi­ra­tory and car­diac ar­rest and was in crit­i­cal con­di­tion at Lutheran Hos­pi­tal.

The in­ci­dent hap­pened at about 2 a.m. June 23 when of­fi­cers tried to stop the driver of a mo­tor­ized scooter for sus­pected DUI. The driver is ac­cused of fight­ing of­fi­cers as they tried to put him in cus­tody.
