GOLDSCHMID­T’S THIRD HOMER OF GAME LIFTS D-BACKS OVER CUBS

Paul Goldschmid­t snapped a tie in the ninth inning with his third long homer of the game, and the Diamondbac­ks pulled out a rain-delayed 10-8 victory over the Cubs on Thursday.

Goldschmid­t hit a 3-2 pitch from Wade Davis (2-1) deep into the right-center bleachers with one out. J.D. Martinez followed Davis with another solo blast off the Cubs closer.

Goldschmid­t’s first career three-homer game gave him 25 for the season, and his six RBIs matched a career high.

Brandon Drury also homered for Arizona, which remained percentage points ahead of Colorado for the top National League wild card.

Willson Contreras smacked two home runs and had a career-high six RBIs for Chicago, which lost consecutiv­e games for the first time since the all-star break. The Cubs’ NL Central lead over Milwaukee slipped to 1½ games.

Corey Kluber upstaged Sonny Gray’s debut for New York by pitching a three-hitter and leading the Indians to a 5-1 win over the sloppy Yankees. Kluber (9-3) struck out 11 and Cleveland’s ace threw his third complete game this season as the defending American League champions won the opener of a four-game series with a potential playoff opponent, ending their losing streak at three. For five innings, Gray (6-6) was nearly as good as Kluber, but New York made three errors in the first behind the right-hander, acquired at Monday’s trade deadline from Oakland to help the Yankees return to the postseason. … Alex Wood allowed one run in six innings to avenge his lone loss of the season, Chris Taylor had three hits, including a two-run homer, and the Dodgers beat the Braves 7-4. … Keon Broxton drove in the go-ahead run and saved a run with a leaping catch, Matt Garza made a strong start in his return from the disabled list, and the Brewers beat the Cardinals 2-1. … Chad Kuhl allowed four hits in seven efficient innings, Starling Marte went 3-for-4 and scored three times, and the Pirates had little trouble with the Reds in a 6-0 victory. … Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer and Rick Porcello ended a fourgame losing streak with his first win since June as the Red Sox beat the White Sox 9-5. Mookie Betts hit a two-run homer and Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in a run as the Red Sox won their third straight. … Joey Gallo hit another massive homer, a three-run shot in the fourth inning that spurred the Rangers on to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. … Brandon Moss hit two home runs and Lorenzo Cain drove in the goahead run in the seventh inning as the Royals beat the Mariners 6-4. The Royals rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 for their 32nd comeback victory. They snapped a three-game losing streak. … Steven Souza Jr. homered and drove in three runs, Corey Dickerson added three hits and made a dazzling defensive play to preserve the lead, and the Rays beat the

5-3.

Tigers place Fulmer on DL.The

Tigers have placed right-hander Michael Fulmer on the 10-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Fulmer, the 2016 AL rookie of the year, had been dealing with elbow discomfort for years before it worsened during his last start.
